Discovery Defender

AFFECTED RANGE:

Discovery prior to VIN WA 794728 Defender prior to VIN WA 153263

PROBLEM:

UNABLE TO SELECT / DESELECT DIFFERENTIAL LOCK The customer complains that diff lock will not engage, or will not disengage if engagement is achieved. The diff lock warning light may operate normally.

CAUSE:

Incorrect depth setting of the diff lock warning light switch preventing movement of the diff lock mechanism.

ACTION:

At the above VINs, a new switch spacer was introduced to overcome the possibility of incorrectly setting the diff lock switch.

In the event of the need to replace the switch, the new spacer UYF100160 should also be fitted. Use the procedure overleaf to ensure that the switch is automatically set to the correct depth.

Bulletin N o : 0005 L8455bu 1 26.08.98

1. Fit the new spacer to a new switch with the spacer counterbore , A in illustration, facing the switch head.

2. Screw the spacer fully onto the switch until it contacts firmly the underside of the switch head, with no visible gap, B in illustration.

3. Apply Hylomar sealant onto the switch thread and fit switch to front output housing.

4. Hand tighten the switch until the spacer contacts the housing, then apply a torque of 11Nm TO THE SPACER, NOT THE SWITCH.
