Tyre Fitting and Removal - Alloy Wheel Rims

MODEL AFFECTED VEHICLES

Range Rover Range Rover from (1986) LH 273923 onwards Discovery Discovery from (1989) LJ 394352 onwards

DETAIL

The alloy wheels fitted to both Range Rover and Discovery are of the Asymmetric Hump (AH2) type. These wheels have a variable internal profile around the circumference to improve retention of the tyre and, consequently, driving security in the event of a deflation. The working principal of the AH2 wheel is that the profile of each bead seat is made up of two safety humps of normal diameter. The centres of these humps are offset from the centre of rotation of the wheel by the standard hump height and are mutally out of phase by 180 degrees. This in effect gives double hump height for bead retention, but during fitting and removal, requires the tyre to pass over the standard hump diameter only. In general, tyre fitting and removal procedures are the same as for normal wheels, but will be facilitated by paying particular attention to the instructions identified in the procedure below.

ACTION REQUIRED

When removing or fitting tyres to alloy wheel rims the procedure identified below is to be followed.

PARTS INFORMATION

For information only.

PROCEDURE

When fitting:

1) Lubricate the tyre beads and the rim flanges. 2) Commence with the valve at the 6 o'clock position. (Valve opposite the fitting head of the machine) 3) Do not exceed 3.5 bar (50 psi) in order to seat the tyre on the rim. 4) If the tyre does not seat at this pressure, deflate, turn the tyre on the rim, re-lubricate and carry out the procedure again.

When removing:

1) Unseating of the bead should commence at the valve position.

NOTE: Incorrect tyre removal can result in damage to the tyre bead which renders the tyre unserviceable. Refer to the illustrations overleaf.
