VEHICLE SAFETY RECALL - D456 (NHTSA #96V-247)

A possible defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in some 1995 and 1996 model year Land Rover "Discovery" vehicles imported by Land
Rover North America, Inc.

DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT

The right front door on some 1995 and 1996 Discovery vehicles may fail to latch fully, causing the door to "bounce" back off of the door seals.
Procedures have been established to inspect all side doors on all affected vehicles and to rectify latch problems determined by that inspection.

An extended length latch mounting fastener has been introduced to assure proper orientation of the right front door latch relative to the mounting leg of
the adjacent window frame. The new fastener must be installed on vehicles within the following VIN ranges:

SA156138 - TA200000, SA500045 - TA534099, TA700000 - TA703236

In cases where latch loads have been excessive, replacement of the latch may be required.

VEHICLES INVOLVED/CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

A total of 20141 Discovery vehicles are involved in this recall action. Customer notification will begin on January 24, 1997. A sample of the customer
notification letter is included in this bulletin.

Any unsold vehicles on the VIN list and in retailer stock must be modified prior to sale.

WORK PROCEDURES

While not all vehicles affected by this recall have the manufacturing defect which causes latch interference, all right front doors on affected vehicles are
to be inspected and repaired. In addition, all other latches on the vehicle side doors are to be inspected for possible alignment and functional problems
and repaired if necessary.

Refer to the enclosed Technical Information Bulletin D456 for detailed repair procedures. A special instructive service video "Discovery Door Latch
Repairs: Technician's Guide" has been prepared. It is being forwarded under separate cover.

Note about tool requirements

Two special tools are required for the correct performance of this recall:

Special tool LRNA1327 has been developed for adjustment of the rear door case if required. This tool will be sent to all Land Rover Retailers at no
charge.

To perform the installation of the door latches a quality torque wrench or torque screwdriver capable of tightening the latch retention screws to the
specified torque value of 4-5 Nm (36-45 lbf.in.) must be available to technicians.

STATUS CHECKING/VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

You may check the disposition of any vehicle using the Land Rover DCS terminal - Warranty Recall/Search screen.

In order to prevent recall duplication, complete and install a Service Campaign label on the vertical portion of the radiator support panel near the vehicle
emissions label and cover the label with a clear acrylic cover.
