A number of reports have been received which detail oil leaks from the centre plate and extension housing joint. At the VIN's identified above a new
manufacturing process was implemented that eliminated the use of conventional gaskets and introduced liquid sealant Hylogrip 2000. Investigation by
Land Rover engineers found that the cause of these oil leaks can be attributed to insufficient sealant applied to the joint faces of mating parts.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of oil leaks from this area or if identified during routine servicing follow the procedure below.

PROCEDURE

Remove the gearbox from the vehicle refer to section 37 of the workshop manual. (Refer to Bulletin 37/01/94 for gearbox dismantling procedures)

Carefully remove the extension housing ensuring that the main case/centre plate joint is not disturbed. (If there is any doubt both sides of the centre plate
will have to be resealed).

The joint faces should be cleaned and checked for damage, any high spots noted can be carefully removed using a fine file.

Apply a continuous 3 mm bead of sealant around the joint faces and ensure there is an overlap at the start and finish point of the bead.

Reassemble extension housing and refit gearbox.

Refer to bulletin 37/01/94 for tightening torques.
