A number of reports have been received which detail oil leaks from the power take off (PTO) cover plate on the rear of the transfer gearbox. At the VIN
identified above a new manufacturing process was implemented that eliminated the use of conventional gaskets and introduced liquid Hylogrip 2000.
Investigation by Land Rover engineers found that the cause of these oil leaks can be attributed to two conditions:

1) Insufficient sealant applied to the joint faces of mating pans.

2) Joint face on PTO cover not flat

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of an oil leak from this area or if identified during normal servicing follow the procedure below.

PROCEDURE

Refer to section 41 of the workshop manual for PTO cover plate removal instructions.

1) Remove the PTO cover plate and dean any residual sealant from both joint faces of the plate and gearbox casing.

2) Check PTO cover plate joint face for flatness using a straight edge. replace the cover plate if excessive distortion is noted. greater than .010 inch
