PROBLEM:
ENGINE SPEED INCREASES INVOLUNTARILY ON START UP - OIL FILL
When starting the engine following an oil change, the engine may briefly run up beyond controlled speed.
CAUSE:
Rapid replenishment of engine oil. If the fill rate exceeds the rate at which the oil can drain through the engine, some oil may enter the breathing system. When the engine is re-started, any oil present in the breathing system may be ingested, causing the engine speed to increase.
ACTION:
To prevent the possibility of serious engine damage, DO NOT USE PRESSURE FILL EQUIPMENT.
It is essential that oil is only poured direct from its container, or via a suitable standard funnel, which has a neck smaller than the filler neck to ensure an air gap.
Filling will be facilitated if completed while the engine is still warm. It is a requirement that oil should only be drained from a warm engine. A minimum run time of five minutes prior to draining is essential.
Please ensure that everyone involved with oil change procedures is aware of the consequences of filling too rapidly.
