AFFECTED RANGE:

All derivatives

PROBLEM:

INTERMITTENT OPERATION OF FUEL GAUGE The customer may report one or more of the following symptoms: a. Fuel gauge reads zero regardless of fuel in tank. b. Gauge shows a static reading with various levels of fuel in tank. c. Incorrect level of fuel shown on gauge, i.e: the fuel gauge consistently indicates inaccurate fuel levels.

CAUSE:

Intermittent operation / failure of the fuel gauge sender unit.

ACTION:

Where a customer complaint consistent with any of the above symptoms is confirmed, use the procedure below to ensure correct operation of the fuel gauge sender unit. SYMPTOM ‘a’ • Replace the sender unit. Refer to Workshop Manual repair number 88.25.32. SYMPTOM ‘b’ • Rectify as symptom ‘a’. SYMPTOM ‘c’ 1. Remove the fuel pump assembly, repair number 19.45.08 refers. 2. Inspect the pump assembly for external damage, e.g: distorted sender unit float arm. 3. If no visual defects can be seen, disconnect the 2 fuel gauge sender connectors from the top of the pump assembly, (arrowed in illustration) and connect to an electrical test meter.

4. Place the pump assembly upright on a flat level surface. 5. Measure the distance from the surface to the rest position of the end of the float arm, dimension ‘A’ in illustration. 6. With the float arm still in the rest position, note the resistance at the sender connectors. Refer to table for correct dimension and resistance. 7. Raise the float arm to its highest position, dimension ‘B’ in illustration and repeat float height and resistance measurements. Refer to table for correct dimension and resistance. Minor adjustments can be made to the position of the float by carefully bending the float arm. 8. If the measured resistance remains outside the specified range, replace the sender unit. Refer to repair number 88.25.32 for method. 9. Refit the fuel pump assembly to the tank using a new sealing ring ESR3806.
