Freelander Td4 Diesel Manual Gearbox Derivatives Only

Build date range

PROBLEM:

CLUTCH FAILURE DUE TO FLUID LOSS

CAUSE:

The two roll pins retaining the clutch slave cylinder feed and bleed pipes have been manufactured below tolerance. During vehicle operation the roll pins work loose and allow the fluid pipes to detach themselves from the slave cylinder resulting in loss of fluid.

ACTION:

All Freelander Td4 vehicles that are currently in PDI centres and dealer stock MUST be reworked prior to customer dispatch. A number of vehicles may be released once the date code label has been inspected to determine that the slave cylinder, falls outside the suspect batch. A number of vehicles have been reworked at Land Rover, these vehicles will require no further action and can be identified by a green paint mark applied to the fluid feed pipe quick fit connector. Those vehicles that are in the hands of customers and are in affected VIN range that must be contacted by youselves to have this work completed as soon as possible.

PROCEDURE

Procedure I - Inspect date code label -(refer to illustration M33 0452 below) 1. Locate the build date label (Blue in colour) on the clutch feed pipe or bleed pipe. 2. Read the label information. If this is not possible, score down the label using a scalpel or modeling knife. Take care not to remove the surface coating on the pipe. 3. Carefully raise the scored edge of the label using the scalpel blade, then use fingers to gently peel the label from the pipe. 4. If the date code on the label falls between 103G and 162G the gearbox will require removal to facilitate further rework. 5. If the date code is before 103G or after 162G no further action is required. 6. Apply a green paint mark to the fluid feed pipe quick fit connector to provide visual identification that this work has been completed.

Procedure II - Fit split pins -(refer to illustration M33 0453 below) 1. Remove the gearbox, Workshop Manual repair number 37.20.02.99 refers. 2. Inspect the roll pins securing the clutch feed and bleed pipes. If the roll pins are still in position, or if they have moved forward they must be pushed back into the slave cylinder housing. Split pin, UYT000010 must now be inserted down the centre bore of each roll pin to retain the roll pin in position. 3. In the unlikely event that one or both roll pins are missing, a new slave cylinder assembly must be fitted. 4. Prise out the rubber grommet securing the feed and bleed pipes to the gearbox casing and move the slave cylinder forward. 5. Insert split pin, UYT000010 down the centre bore of each roll pin and separate the two halves of the split pin to retain it in position. The separated ends must abut the gearbox casing. 6. Fit the rubber grommet into its aperture. 7. Refit the gearbox, Workshop Manual repair number 37.20.02.99 refers. 8. Apply a green paint mark to the fluid feed pipe quick fit connector to provide visual identification that this work has been completed.
