DATE: May 05, 2006
Section: 303-08
Evaporative Loss System DTC P0442, P0455
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Land Rover LR3 (LA)
VIN: 5A000360 to 6A387097
CONDITION SUMMARY:
MIL ILLUMINATION
Situation:
A customer may report a concern that the Check Engine lamp has illuminated. Investigation using the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) reveals
diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0455 (evaporative loss gross leak detected) or P0442 (evaporative loss small leak detected).
The most likely cause of the above lamp display is an incorrectly installed or missing fuel filler cap.
Action:
Should a customer express concern regarding the above, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to update the engine control module
software to the latest configuration.
On vehicles built after 6A387097 and on updated vehicles a message 'Fuel Tank Cap Loose or Missing' will display at the first loose cap event
prompting the owner to check the gas cap. When the cap is properly installed shortly after the message is displayed the engine warning lamp will not
illuminate because the on-board diagnostics require two consecutive occurrences to illuminate the lamp. If the customer has not taken the opportunity to
install the filler cap correctly a second sequential event will prompt the Check Engine lamp illumination with the corresponding trouble codes.

NOTE:
The on-board diagnostics require two consecutive occurrences of a detected evaporative loss system leak to illuminate the Check Engine lamp
(the first detection being stored in memory).
^
When illuminated, a service visit is required to use T4/WDS to verify the leak and extinguish the lamp.
^
In most cases, the leak is traced to an incorrectly installed filler cap.
