Inlet Manifold Valley Gasket- Leak

MODEL

New Range Rover V8 Derivatives Range Rover Classic V8 Derivatives Discovery V8 Derivatives Defender V8 Derivatives

DETAIL

There has been a small number of cases of inlet manifold/valley gasket leaks, following investigations, it has been found that the torque down procedure did not fully compress the Wolverine gasket material. Land Rover have introduced a two stage torque down procedure, to ensure that full compression is achieved.

Note: This bulletin supersedes 12/09/96 the information in the SRO section has been amended

ACTION REQUIRED

If a coolant/air leak is detected from the valley gasket region follow the procedure detailed below, only replace the valley gasket in the event of a leak that cannot be rectified by the re-torque procedure.

PROCEDURE

Refer to the workshop manual section 12.

1. Loosen all inlet manifold/valley gasket bolts and clamp bolts.

2. Tighten clamp bolts at front and rear of gasket to 0.5 Nm-1.0 Nm (0.4-0.7 lbft) torque.

3. Tighten the 12 off inlet manifold/cylinder head bolts to a torque of 30 Nm (21 lbft).

4. After a minimum period of 5 minutes to allow bedding in of the gasket, re-tighten all inlet manifold/cylinder head bolts to a torque of 47-54 Nm (35-40 lbft) using a standard torque wrench.

5. Tighten clamp bolts at front and rear of gasket to 14-20 Nm (10-15 lbft). 6. Remove any surplus water from valley area. Refer to the illustration opposite, which details the bolt tightening sequence.  Rover Group 1996
