GUIDELINES FOR DIAGNOSIS OF COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE MALFUNCTIONS

TO: All Range Rover Dealers

The following procedures should be followed when diagnosing suspected problems with the coolant temperature gauge.

Gauge operation is similar to that of the fuel level gauge, in that both share a common 10V power supply (part of the multi function unit) and both use a
variable resistance to complete a ground circuit which deflects the gauge needle. Before attempting diagnosis determine whether both gauges have failed
or are inaccurate as this normally indicates a problem with the multifunction unit (see Bulletin No 87-018 for testing procedures).

COMPLAINT:

No coolant gauge reading

POSSIBLE CAUSES:

1)

Defective gauge

2)

Defective coolant temperature sensor

3)

Poor connections; open wiring

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:

1)

Remove green/blue wire from temperature sensor

2)

Switch on ignition

3)

Connect an accurate voltmeter between the disconnected wire and ground. Specification: 10.0 +/- 0.25V

RESULTS:

1.

Correct voltage at this point indicates continuity from the multifunction unit through the gauge assembly. In this case the fault is probably with the
temperature sensor or temperature sensor ground Test the sensor with an ohmmeter (see table No. 2) and repair/replace as required.

2.

Low or No Voltage at the temperature sensor wiring connector can indicate a number of faults including:

A.

Open wire from connector to Binnacle 5 pin plug.

B.

Open wire/poor connection from the 5 pin binnacle plug to circuit board terminal.

C.

Defective printed circuit board.

D.

Poor connections at temperature gauge studs.

E.

Defective multifunction unit (fuel gauge failure will be evident also).

F.

Defective gauge assembly.

With a voltmeter test from point to point as indicated above until the faulty component is isolated. Refer to the Workshop Manual for correct component
replacement procedure and diagram of binnacle wiring/circuit board.

COMPLAINT:

Gauge appears to be inaccurate - reads too high or too low.
