SUBJECT:
Shock Absorber Leaks - Low Mileage Vehicles
As part of the manufacturing process, a small amount of oil is left on the shock absorber body. When investigating complaints of leakage on new or low
mileage vehicles, it is important to first wipe off any residue and then road test the vehicle.
DIAGNOSTIC WORK PROCEDURE
^
Clean off all traces of shock absorber oil from the shock body. This also applies to the Boge Load-Levelling unit, if installed.
^
Road test the vehicle on a rough surface so that the shocks will compress and extend repeatedly.
^
Re-examine for leaks.
NOTE:
Very few low mileage shocks have been found to actually leak. Submit a Product Report on any which require replacement at 1000 miles or less.
^
If replacement is required, refer to the Workshop Manual. Sections 60 and 64.
^
At less than 1,000 miles (1600km) it is not necessary to replace both shocks on one axle if only one is leaking.
