Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair
1. Drain brake hydraulic system, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Support rear axle weight with suitable hydraulic jack, then disconnect ABS wiring harness multi-plug at jump hose bracket.
3. Disconnect shock absorbers, then the flexible brake hose at connection under floor.
4. Disconnect lower links at axle, then mark differential and propeller shaft flanges for installation reference.
5. Remove propeller shaft nuts and bolts, then lower propeller shaft and tie to one side.
6. Disconnect pivot bracket ball joint at axle bracket.
7. Remove coil spring plate bolts, then the plates.
8. Lower axle and remove springs.
9. Disconnect torsion bar links from axle as follows:
a. Remove nuts, bolts, washers and rubber bushings from ball joint links, then the lower torsion bar to clear links.
b. Remove cotter pin and loosen castellated nut a few turns.
c. Remove ball joint using ball joint puller tool No. 18G 0.063A, or equivalent.
d. Remove castellated nut and ball joint link.
10. Remove rear axle.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Bleed brake system.
