Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove cooling fan assembly.
3. Disconnect air flow meter to plenum chamber hose.
4. Remove shift lever knobs from console.
5. Remove console assembly.
6. Remove padding from top of transmission tunnel.
7. Loosen pinch bolt and remove upper gear lever.
8. Remove screws and detach high/low lever and main gear lever retaining plates.
9. Drain oil from transfer case, transmission and extension housing.

10. Remove oxygen sensor.
11. Remove front section of exhaust system.
12. Remove chassis crossmember.
13. Mark each drive flange for installation reference, then disconnect front and rear propeller shafts from transfer case. Position propeller shafts aside.
14. Disconnect speed transducer connector.
15. Disconnect breather pipe and harness from righthand side of transmission.
16. Remove clutch slave cylinder from bell housing.
17. Remove transmission brake drum and position assembly aside.
18. Position a suitable jack under transmission/transfer case assembly.
19. Remove transmission to engine attaching bolts, then the transmission/transfer case assembly.
20. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specification.
