Shifter A/T: Description and Operation

OPERATION

Vehicles with automatic transmission are fitted with an "H-gate" gear selector mechanism. This combines the operating mechanism of both the main
gearbox and transfer box, the gear selector positions for high and low gear ranges being located either side of the selector lever as shown.

The driver's side of the "H-gate" is used to select the high range of gears; by moving the lever to the passenger side, the low range can be selected. The
"H-gate" panel is illuminated and colour coded to identify the two ranges: high range is green and low range amber. To select a high or low range gear
press and hold the spring loaded catch shown, and move the lever through the "H-gate" as required. However, gear selection between "D" and "3"
(high range) or "4" and "3" (low range) can be made without pressing the catch.

Using the "H-gate"

To make a change from high to low or vice versa, the vehicle must be stationary.

Apply the brakes and select "N"

Move the selector lever into the cross-piece of the "H-gate" and select the new gear range, the panel illumination will flash before becoming
constant.

When the illumination is constant select the gear required.

CAUTION:If a gear is selected before the gear transfer is complete, a "clunk" or grinding sound will be heard because the electric shift motor has not

completed the operation. 

If this occurs and the panel illumination continues to flash, reselect neutral and try again when the illumination becomes constant.

If the vehicle is moving when a transfer gear change is attempted, the message center will display "SLOW DOWN".

If an attempt is made to change the gear range with the gear selector out of neutral, "SELECT NEUTRAL" will be displayed.
