Camshaft: Service and Repair

    If it is necessary to replace the camshaft only, it may be accomplished without removing the engine from the chassis. However, if the camshaft
bearings are to be replaced, the engine will have to be removed. To remove the camshaft, refer to the procedure outlined below. It may be necessary to
remove or reposition radiator, A/C compressor and grille components to provide adequate clearance.

1.

To remove camshaft, remove front cover and timing chain.

2.

Remove distributor cap and spark plug wires, then remove distributor.

3.

Disconnect automatic transmission oil cooler lines from radiator and remove radiator.

4.

Remove intake manifold and carburetor (if equipped) as an assembly.

5.

Remove rocker arm covers.

6.

Loosen rocker arm fulcrum or bolts and rotate rocker arms to one side.

7.

Remove push rods, keeping them in sequence in a rack so they may be installed in their original location.

8.

Using a magnet, remove valve lifters and place them in a rack in sequence so they may be installed in their original location.

9.

Remove camshaft thrust plate, and carefully pull camshaft from engine, using care to avoid damaging camshaft bearings.

10.

Reverse procedure to install. Prior to installation of the camshaft, lubricate push rods and camshaft lobes with lubricant part No.
D9AZ-19579-C or equivalent on V6-232 engines and D0AZ-19584-A or equivalent for V8-302 engines. Using engine oil SF, lubricate
valve tappets & bores.
