Cruise Control Brush Assembly: Service and Repair
1.
disarm airbag system.
2.
Center vehicle front wheels in the straight ahead position.
3.
Remove four nut and washer assemblies retaining airbag module module to steering wheel.
4.
Disconnect airbag electrical connector from clockspring contact connector, then remove airbag module from steering wheel. Place airbag module
on bench with trim pad facing up.
5.
Remove steering wheel retaining bolt, then discard bolt.
6.
Install Steering Wheel Puller tool No. T67L-3600-A or equivalent, then remove steering wheel.
7.
Remove tilt lever, if equipped.
8.
On Continental models, remove ignition lock cylinder assembly.
9.
On Sable & Taurus models, if a new contact assembly is to be installed, remove ignition lock mechanism.
10.
On all models, remove lower trim panel, then lower steering column shroud.
11.
Disconnect contact assembly wiring harness.
12.
Apply two pieces of tape across contact assembly stator and rotor to prevent accidental rotation.
13.
Remove three contact assembly retaining screw, then lift contact assembly off steering column shaft.
14.
Disconnect speed control brush wiring harness at connector, then remove wiring harness retainers from steering column.
15.
Remove screw retaining brush assembly to upper steering column, then brush and harness assembly.
16.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque contact assembly retaining screws to 18-26 inch. lbs.
b. Ensure wiring is positioned so that no interference in encountered when installing the airbag module.
17.
Reactivate Reactivate airbag system.
