Fan Clutch: Testing and Inspection
Minimum/Maximum Speed Fan Clutch Requirement Test

MINIMUM SPEED FAN CLUTCH REQUIREMENT TEST (COLD)

NOTE: 
^

The electro-drive fan must be disconnected prior to testing the fan clutch.

The fan clutch may stall when the auxiliary electro-drive fan is in operation. This is normal operation and may cause component test errors if
the auxiliary electro-drive fan is not disconnected.

1. Using a suitable marker, mark the water pump pulley (8509), one of the fan blade retaining bolts and the crankshaft pulley (6312).
2. Connect a tachometer to the engine.
3. Install a throttle adjusting tool.
4. Connect a strobe light. A Rotunda Digital Photoelectric Tachometer 055-00108 or equivalent may also be used for this test.

WARNING:  TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE THE
ENGINE WITH THE HOOD (16612) OPEN UNTIL THE FAN BLADE HAS BEEN FIRST EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS
AND SEPARATION.

5. Start the engine and run it at approximately 1500 rpm until engine temperature has normalized.
6. Adjust the engine to the specified engine testing speed.
7. Operate the strobe light at 3000 rpm and aim it at the water pump pulley. Adjust the engine speed until the light flashes and the water pump pulley

marks are synchronized.

8. Aim the strobe light at the fan blade retaining bolts. Adjust the strobe light until it is synchronized with the marked fan blade retaining bolt (fan

blade appears to stand still).

9. The fan blade speed must not be greater than the specified fan blade test speed at 3000 water pump rpm.

10. Turn the engine OFF.
11. If the fan blade speed was greater than the specified fan blade test speed, replace the fan clutch. If the parts are not the correct ones, replace the

parts and perform the test again.

12. If Maximum Speed Fan Clutch Requirement Test is going to be performed, do not remove the tachometer, strobe light or throttle adjusting tool.
13. Otherwise, remove the tachometer, strobe light and throttle adjusting tool.

MAXIMUM SPEED FAN CLUTCH REQUIREMENT TEST

NOTE:  If the Minimum Speed Fan Clutch Requirement Test was not performed, follow Steps 1 through 5 under Minimum Speed Fan Clutch
Requirement Test.

1. Disconnect the electric fan.

NOTE:  The engine coolant temperature should be above 87°C (189°F) for maximum fan speed.

2. Block off areas on each side of the radiator in the engine with two strips of cardboard 254 x 508 mm (10 x 22 inch) inserted vertically between

radiator and A/C condenser core. This will raise the temperature of the air striking the fan clutch and should cause the fan blade to operate at
maximum speed.

3. Place the air conditioning selector in the MAXIMUM position and the blower switch in the HIGH position.
4. Adjust the strobe light to 3000 rpm.

WARNING:  TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, DO NOT OPERATE THE
ENGINE WITH THE HOOD OPEN UNTIL THE FAN BLADE HAS BEEN FIRST EXAMINED FOR POSSIBLE CRACKS AND
SEPARATION.

5. Start the engine and adjust it until the water pump pulley is synchronized with the strobe light. This will be near the engine testing speed given in

Specifications.

6. Synchronize the strobe light with the fan blade-to-fan clutch retaining bolt.
7. The fan blade speed must meet or exceed the specified maximum fan blade test speed at 3000 water pump rpm.
8. If the fan blade speed was less than the specified fan blade test speed, replace the fan clutch.
9. Connect electric fan.
