Front Crankshaft Seal - Replacement
REF. NO. 03/42
To: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
DATE: June 1987
SUBJECT:
REPLACEMENT OF FRONT CRANKSHAFT SEAL
ENGINES 601, 602, AND 603
Oil leaks at the front of the crankshaft, can in most cases, be repaired by replacing the front seal. A simultaneous replacement of the wear ring is only
necessary if two grooves have been worn into the ring by the seal. For wear rings with only one groove, a special seal is available where the sealing lip is
offset 2 mm to the rear. If the wear ring just has a polished surface, only the standard version should be installed.
Note:
Press the dry radial seal into the timing chain cover (do not use grease). After installation, coat lip of seal with engine oil, do not use grease (1, Figure
