Drive/Propeller Shaft - Shield for Center Bearing

SHIELD FOR DRIVE SHAFT BEARING MODEL 201.122
As of August 1985 production, a shield has been installed to prevent road dirt from entering the drive shaft bearing.

If the drive shaft bearing is being replaced on earlier production vehicles, due to customer complaints of noises at speeds between 12 and 50 mph (20
and 80 Km/h), or for other reasons, also install the protective shield.
Submit warranty claim for parts and labor in the usual manner..
Procedure
1.
Replace drive shaft bearing. See Service Microfiche "Clutch, Pedal Assembly, Universal Shaft", job no. 41-100.
Note:
Check centering sleeves on removed drive shaft for adequate grease, add if necessary (see S.I. 41/10, May 1986).
2.
Inspect rubber mount, replace if necessary.

Secure shield (narrow or wide version according to tunnel width, see Parts Information) to cross member with sheet metal screws using existing
holes (Figure 1).
4.
Drill two holes (3.5 mm dia.) into frame floor, through existing holes in shield (arrow, Figure 1).
CAUTION! Be extremely careful when the drill breaks through, as otherwise the floor carpeting could be damaged.
5.
Apply MB zinc dust primer to the bare metal area of the drill holes prior to painting them with black paint. Protect the area with MB
anti-corrosion wax.
6.
Secure shield to frame floor with sheet metal screws.
