Explanation concerning lamp lens modification

TO ALL MERCEDES-BENZ DEALERS:

We would like to inform you of the self-explanatory text of a letter we received from NHTSA, as follows:

"Complaints are reaching the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that prior to first sale some new car dealers associated with a
number of manufacturers are inserting a company logo name or logo onto the lens of center high mounted stop lamps (CHMSL) as a means of
advertising their dealerships. These inserts mask a portion of the effective area of the lens, reducing the ability of the CHMSL to serve the safety purpose
for which it was intended. Mercedes-Benz is requested to advise its dealership organization that this practice should be stopped.

In addition, a CHMSL so modified may not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and
Associated Equipment", at the time the dealer delivers the car to the first purchaser for purposes other than resale. As you know, that dealer may be
violating section 108 of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966."

Please assure that the above is adhered to so that compliance with FMVSS 108 is not jeopardized.
