Oil Filter Housing: Customer Interest
Engine - Oil Filter Housing O-Ring Inspection
REF. NO.
MBNA 18/11a
TO:
OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS
DATE:
June 1991 (supersedes MBNA 18/11, April 1991)
SUBJECT:
ENGINES 602, 603 INSPECTION OF OIL FILTER O-RINGS
Note:
This Service Information is revised to include an improved illustration.
During the next oil filter charge, the condition of the oil filter O-rings (1) in the stem of the filter housing lid should be checked. The O-rings prevent the
oil in the filter housing from draining back into the pan once the engine is turned off. If one or both of the O-rings are damaged or hardened, they should
both be replaced.
In case of the customer complaints regarding "Noisy engine during and after starting" (especially with a hot engine) which can be traced to noisy
hydraulic valve tappets, check the condition of the O-rings before the tappets are replaced. If replacement of the O-rings does not eliminate the noise
complaint, only then may additional repairs be performed.
Note:
A momentary "ticking" noise after engine start-up is a normal operating condition.
