INSTALLATION OF MODIFIED FRONT CRANKSHAFT RADIAL SEAL RING ENGINE 617.95

This Service Information contains updated information on sealing the crankcase cover and installing the modified radial seal ring. Please destroy your copy of 03/34a, April 1983.

To improve centering, the modified crankshaft radial seal ring (repair version) is covered with a heavy, grooved rubber coating over half the width of the
outer shoulder. The other half is bare metal (arrow, Figure 1).

The color of the radial seal is brown (previous versions were black or green/black).
Repair Hints

If there is oil leakage around the front crankshaft radial seal ring, the crankcase cover must be removed and resealed, in addition to replacing the radial
seal. Second and third repairs indicate that the procedure below is not always followed exactly. That is, removal (also in case of a new cover) and
resealing the cover are omitted in many instances.

The following procedure should be strictly adhered to:

Procedure

For removal instructions, refer to microfiche "Engine 617.95 Turbodiesel, Mechanical I", job no. 01-215, 03-107, 03-324 and 03-340.

Thoroughly clean the removed crankcase cover (reinforced version) as well as the oil pan and crankcase sealing surfaces.

Apply an even coat of M-B Sealant (part no. 001 989 29 20) or 3-M Super Silicone Sealant (No. 08661) to the sealing surfaces of the crankcase
cover only where it comes in contact with the crankcase and oil pan (arrows, Figure 2). Also apply the sealant to M6 x 30 screws.

CAUTION! Do not use Loctite 573 to seal the cover.
