Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair

Steering Lock Assemblies

NOTE: THREE types of steering lock assemblies were used on this vehicle.  One style uses a screw-on lock cylinder cap (VERSION 2), the other uses

a plug-on type (VERSION 1).  A new screw-on type (VERSION 3, similar to VERSION 2) is the only replacement part available.  Some
modification of the dash cut-out as well as a larger ignition switch bezel may be required for installation.  Component replacement for all three
types is the same except where indicated in the text.

The steering lock assembly is comprised of three main components:

1.

Ignition lock (locking cylinder)

2.

Ignition switch (starter switch)

3.

Steering column lock (steering lock)

Use this procedure to replace the STEERING COLUMN LOCK.  Additional information is also available for IGNITION LOCK replacement and 
IGNITION SWITCH replacement.

REMOVAL

1.

Disconnect battery.

2.

Remove instrument cluster by pulling out as far as possible.  Remove tachometer cable, electrical connectors, and oil pressure line.

3.

Remove driver's side under-dash panel.

4.

Remove starter switch connector.

5.

Remove vacuum switch hoses.

6.

Remove starter switch bezel.

7.

VERSION 1 (Plug-on cap)
a. Remove lock cylinder cap using a 1mm thick wire hook.
b. Insert starter key and turn to position "1".

8.

VERSION 2 (Screw-on cap)
a. Insert starter key and turn to position "1".
