Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
Replacement

REMOVAL

1.

Raise and support vehicle.

2.

Remove tire and wheel assembly.

3.

Open brake caliper bleeder screw, then pump brake fluid out of front brake circuit.

4.

Disconnect and cap brake hose from brake line.

5.

On vehicles with wear indicator, pull clip sensor cables out of caliper plug connector.

6.

Remove brake lining wear indicator plug connector and brake hose from caliper.

7.

Cap caliper and brake hose openings.

8.

Unstake locking plate, then remove caliper pin attaching bolts.

9.

Remove caliper from steering knuckle.

INSTALLATION

    When installing brake calipers, brake calipers of one axle should have the same caliper piston diameter. Only calipers of the same
manufacturer should be installed on one axle side. Teves calipers with a 2.24 inch (57 mm) caliper piston diameter and 2.36 inch (60 mm)
caliper piston diameter is used. Bendix and Girling type calipers with 2.36 inch (60 mm) caliper piston diameter is also used. Teves type calipers
will have either a paint marking or a stamped number, indicating piston diameter which is located on the front caliper cover. 2.24 inch (57 mm)
piston diameter calipers will have the number 22 painted or stamped on the caliper. 2.36 inch (60 mm) piston diameter calipers will have a
stamped number 60 stamped on the caliper. Bendix type calipers will have a stamped number located to the left of the manufacturer's name.
The 2.36 inch (60 mm) piston diameter caliper will be identified by the stamped number 60.

1.

Using new locking plate and attaching bolts, install caliper onto steering knuckle, Figs. 1 through 4.

2.

Torque caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts to 84 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).

3.

Insert brake hose through bracket. Ensure bracket guide bracket is not damaged.

4.

Connect brake hose onto caliper.

5.

On vehicles with brake lining wear indicator, connect plug connector onto caliper assembly. Insert clip sensor cable into plug connector.

6.

Connect brake line onto brake hose. Ensure brake hose is not twisted.

7.

Bleed brake system and check brake system for leaks.
