Fuel Pump Relay - Production Changes

SUBJECT:

UNNECESSARY FUEL PUMP RELAY REPLACEMENT ALL MODELS WITH GASOLINE ENGINES

A large percentage of the fuel pump relays being replaced and returned for warranty are found to be in good order. This Service Information examines a
few product changes which should reduce the unnecessary replacement of such relays.

Beginning with the February 1987 production, over a 4 month period, the 4 mm female contacts for the fuel pump relay, made of a
beryllium-copper alloy (previously brass), were phased in reducing the chance of bending or loosening of the contacts. Vehicles of an earlier
production should be carefully inspected for loose, bent or damaged contacts.

As of approximately December 1986 production, a teflon membrane venting has been added to all fuel pump relays, to improve their resistance to
moisture entry. The improved relays can be identified by either vent (Figure 1).

The fuel pump relay operation may be checked by turning the ignition key to position 2 while listening to the fuel pump. The fuel pump should
come on for approximately 1 second.

As a safety feature, the fuel pump relay will not operate unless it receives an rpn signal from the ignition control module via circuit TD. Thus, if the
engine is not running, the supply of fuel is cut off. Therefore, if circuit TD is open to the fuel pump relay, or shortened to ground, the rpm signal does not
reach the fuel pump relay and the fuel supply is shut off. This system is momentarily inhibited (inactive) during when circuit 50 is activated. Before
replacing the fuel pump relay, perform fuel pump relay test for appropriate engine (see Diagnostic Manual).

improved component compartment cover in models 124 and 201, which will reduce the possibility of water entry into the component compartment.
