Power Steering Pump - Leak Checking

SUBJECT:

LEAKING POWER STEERING PUMPS ALL MODELS

Upon warranty inspection of power steering pumps replaced because of leaks, the majority of pumps were found to be not leaking. A power steering
pump should only be replaced if an oil leak (heavy formation of drops) has been diagnosed and the oil level in the reservoir has dropped below the
"Min." mark.

Therefore, the following established test criteria should be considered before replacing the pump.

Leaks at the line connections:
Retighten the high-pressure hose. If the leak remains, then the connection fitting should be checked for damage and, if necessary, the high-pressure hose
replaced.

Formation of drops on the bottom of the power steering pump:
Often caused by an overfilled reservoir. The fill quantity is correct when the oil (at 20~-50~C) is between the "Min." and "Max." marks or 28-36 mm
below the rim of the reservoir (Figure).
Note:

Before tightening the cover onto the reservoir, the seal surfaces of the reservoir and the cover must be cleaned.

The pump should not be replaced if there is a slight oil film on the radial seal ring or on the housing flange. Wipe off the oil film to prevent it from
spreading.

In the future, power steering pump returned under warranty will be more critically. Claims for leaking power steering pump flow to be OK will be
rejected.
