Steering Gear - Inspection After An Accident

REPLACING STEERING GEAR AFTER AN ACCIDENT

A. Evaluating the condition of the steering gear of a vehicle involved in an accident.

1.

In the event of front end damage after an accident the steering components can continue to be used provided that:

^

front axle components such as front axle carriers, steering knuckles, control arms, tie rods, center link, pitman arm, steering knuckle arms and
steering idler arm have not been damaged and the pitman arm shaft is not twisted at the splined section.

^

there are no indications that the front axle has been subjected to excessive force (as indicated by not being able to bring the front end alignment
into specification on the front end alignment rack).

^

the steering can be turned from stop to stop from the steering (universal) joint (arrow, Figure 1) without binding being felt. For this purpose the
drag link (and tie rod, Model 140 only) must be disconnected from the pitman arm (SMS, Grp. 46).

The steering gear must be replaced for safety reasons if:

^

parts of the front axle or the steering linkage have been visibly deformed and chassis measurements on the vehicle indicate that the front axle has
been subjected to impact forces (which results in not being able to bring the front end alignment into specification on the front end alignment
rack).

B. General

When evaluating accident damage involving the steering system, the following must be observed:

An impact transmitted to the steering gear from the steering linkage can cause damage which can not be detectable with a general visual inspection or
turning of the steering (universal) shaft. Therefore, after an accident, the entire steering system must be thoroughly inspected. Steering components must
be replaced in cases where any doubts about hidden cracks are present.
