Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal/Installation

1.

Drain fluid from steering gear assembly.

2.

Disconnect and fluid lines from steering gear assembly.

3.

Loosen lower attaching screw from steering coupling.

4.

Remove capsule nut from drag link and track rod.

5.

Using a suitable puller, push ball joint track rod from pitman arm.

6.

Using a suitable puller, push ball joint of drag link from pitman arm.

7.

Remove self-locking nut from pitman shaft.

8.

On models with V8 engine, remove rear exhaust system, then disconnect lefthand exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.

9.

Remove pitman arm from pitman shaft.

10.

Remove steering shaft.

11.

Remove steering gear to frame floor side member attaching bolts.

12.

Remove steering gear from vehicle.

13.

Reverse procedure to install. On all series except 126, torque steering gear to frame floor side member attaching bolts to 51-59 ft. lbs. (70-80 Nm).
On 126 series, torque steering gear to frame floor side member bolts to 66-81 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm). Torque steering coupling flange attaching bolts
to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Torque pitman arm attaching bolts to 118-147 ft. lbs.(160-200 Nm).  Torque track rod and drag link to pitman arm attaching
nuts to 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
