Brake Discs - Coating Removed During Thorough Test Drive

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: November 1994

REF.NO. 42/127

SUBJECT:
ALL MODELS

REVISED ANTI-CORROSION PROTECTIVE COATING ON SPARE PARTS BRAKE DISCS

As of August 1994. a revised anti-corrosion protective coating was phased in on spare parts brake discs.

The coating is identified by a gray glazed appearance (previously a blue glazed appearance).

The above-mentioned coating is effectively removed during the first brake application and will not affect the performance of the brakes. As a result, the
removal of the anti-corrosion protection coating by means of solvents or a steam cleaner during brake disc installation is no longer necessary.

These brake discs may briefly exhibit the following characteristics:

^

Braking related noise during the first few brake applications.

^

Parking brake squeal (parking brake not applied) with moving vehicle until the brake shoes are seated.

^

Odors related to the first time the brakes are used with greater force.

These characteristics disappear after applying the brakes several times, therefore, a thorough test drive by the technician is recommended to avoid any
unnecessary complaints.
