HEADLAMP WASHER PUMP

On vehicles with the Chassis End Number Range given in the table below, if the headlamp washer system is activated with the headlamp wiper arm
misaligned (i.e. headlamp wiper arm does not stop in park position) or lodged in the groove below the headlamp unit, the headlamp washer pump will
run continuously expelling all available headlamp washer fluid possibly leading to a vehicle fire.

WARNING!

Headlamp washer pump operation without the presence of washer fluid can cause the headlamp washer pump to overheat and cause a vehicle fire.
A modified headlamp washer pump has been designed.

Therefore, on vehicles within the chassis end number range given in the Effective Serial Number table below, the headlamp washer pump must be
replaced with the modified headlamp washer pump.

Note:

An initial supply of parts will shipped to each dealer the week of November 18, 1996.

Procedure

1.

Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2.

Open hood and locate windshield/headlamp washer reservoir (4. Figure 1).

3.

Remove any remaining washer fluid into a clean container so that it can be refilled later.

Remove knurled knob (1, Figure 1) and carefully pull washer fluid reservoir vertically from the mounting bracket (3, Figure 1). Do not remove
either headlamp washer pump or disconnect the washer fluid hose at this time.

Note:

On some vehicles, the washer reservoir is mounted via a tapered mounting bracket only (not secured via knurled knob).
In these cases, carefully pull the washer reservoir vertically from the mounting bracket.

There are two washer pumps located on the washer reservoir. The headlamp washer pump should be located in the forward-most position in the
washer reservoir (Figure 1).

Locate the headlamp washer pump by observing the routing of the washer fluid hoses. The washer fluid hose running to the headlamp unit verifies
the headlamp washer pump. For further verification, note that the wiring harness for the headlamp washer pump is identified with a red band
(Figure 1), located approximately 10 cm from the harness connector.

Disconnect the electrical harness from the headlamp washer pump.

Disconnect the headlamp washer fluid hose.

8.

Carefully pull the headlamp washer pump vertically out of the large rubber mounting grommet mounted in the washer reservoir.
