The steering geometry is checked by measuring the toe-out on turns. This is the difference in the steer angle between the outside wheel and the
inside wheel when the inside wheel is steered through 20 degrees.
-
If substantial deviations are found, the cause may be one of the following, assuming that the camber and caster settings are correct:
-
Toe not adjusted with the rack-and-pinion steering in the straight-ahead position, resulting in tie rods of unequal length.
-
Steering knuckle or tie rod bent
-
On vehicles involved in an accident, excessive deviations in the front end (frame side members, frame crossmembers, wheel housings and
firewall or on the front axle carrier) with detrimental effects on the camber and caster adjustment ranges, resulting in large differences in
the toe-out on turns between the left and right sides.
AR40.20-P-0331P Check and Adjust Rear Axle Camber
Checking Rear Axle Camber
1
Check vehicle level at front and rear axles with electronic inclinometer
2
Checking rear axle camber
NOTE: The camber on the rear axle cannot be adjusted.
Greater deviations on the rear wheel camber could have the following causes:
-
Too great a difference in vehicle level between right and left-hand sides of vehicle.
-
Accident damage on frame floor. Discrepancies in the levels of the mounting points for the rear axle carrier between right and left body side.
Experience shows that bending caused by an accident also has an effect on the toe.
AR40.20-P-0332P Check and Adjust Rear Axle Toe
Check And Adjust Toe-in Of Rear Axle
1
Check vehicle level at front and rear axles with electronic inclinometer and adjust if necessary
2
Adjusting toe-in
-
Overall toe-in at rear axle
NOTE:
-
Adjust toe-in with cam bolt (60a) on mounting of left and right track rod (60) on rear axle carrier (50)
-
Observe permitted difference between right and left side of vehicle for rear axle toe-in.
