Drive/Propeller Shaft: Testing and Inspection
AR41.10-P-0086P Measure Propeller Shaft Alignment With Electronic Angle Meter
AR41.10-P-0086P Measure Propeller Shaft Alignment With Electronic Angle Meter
NOTE:
-
The vehicle must be on its wheels for the measurement
-
The transmission mount and exhaust system must not be stressed during the measurement of the articulated angle
-
Eliminate the stress if necessary
-
On vehicles which are the subject of complaints due to drive line vibrations or roughness when accelerating, the cause may be a deviation in the
propeller shaft-articulation angle from the specified value
DANGER:
-
Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
-
Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points
specified by the vehicle manufacturer
1
Jack up and support vehicle
2.1 Remove bottom section of sound-proofing capsule
2.2 Detach lower engine compartment paneling
3
Remove front reinforcement brace below propeller shaft
NOTE: The exhaust shielding plate for the rear engine mount must not be detached from the reinforcement bridge for this
4
Prepare electronic propeller shaft articulation angle meter
5
Adjust propeller shaft articulation angle meter if necessary
NOTE: See device operating instructions for information about adjusting meter The articulation angle can be measured using two different meters
6
Measurement of absolute angle at transmission
-
Vehicles with manual transmission or automated manual transmission (SEQ)
-
Vehicles with automatic transmission
7
Measuring absolute angle at front and rear propeller shafts
8
Measure absolute angle at rear axle housing
9
Rear out front (41), center (42) and rear articulation angle (43) from the memory of the electronic propeller shaft articulation angle meter and
correct if necessary
NOTE:
If the articulation angle has to be corrected, the necessary assembly operations are to be carried out.
-
Front articulation angle from transmission to front propeller shaft (1 degree)
-
Center articulation angle from front propeller shaft to rear propeller shaft (2 degrees)
-
Rear articulation angle from rear propeller shaft to rear axle center assembly (3 degrees)
Carry out a check measurement again each time the articulation angle is corrected.
