For normal telephone calls, the call is handled via the CTEL antenna (A2/22).

The telephone antenna (A2/22) may be destroyed in the event of an accident (e.g. rollover). As a result it would likewise not be possible to make an
emergency call. In order to prevent this in each case, the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup
antenna (A2/55) are installed in addition to the telephone antenna.

These are installed in the vents under the rear bumper in a manner which is largely safe in crashes and they are only used if required.
As long as no emergency call is triggered, the CTEL antenna (A2/22) is always active. In the event of an emergency call the E-Call control unit (A35/8)
checks the signal level of the telephone antenna (A2/22), the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup
antenna (A2/55). Depending on the result the E-CALL control unit (A35/8) then switches over to the "better" antenna and transmits the emergency call.

In the event of any drop in performance or destruction to the telephone antenna (A2/22) the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and
emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55) are accessed.
The selection and decision, whether and which antenna is to be used for the emergency call, is made by the D2B telephone and TELE AID
transmitter/receiver (A35/17).

The signals received by the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55) are sent via a
coaxial cable to the D2B telephone and TELE AID transmitter/receiver (A35/17) and vice versa.

In the event of any loss of power or destruction of the telephone antenna (A2/22) (model 209.4, model 209.3 up to 31.5.06) or of the telephone antenna
(A2/49a1) (model 209.3 as of 1.6.06), the system switches over to the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and the emergency call system
right backup antenna (A2/55). The emergency call system control unit (N123/4) decides which antenna is to be used for the emergency call.

The signals received by the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55) are relayed
discretely via a coaxial cable to the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) and vice versa.
