Daytime Running Lamp: Description and Operation

Component Identification

Function requirements:

The exterior light switch (S1s1) is in position "0".

The "daytime running lamps" function in the instrument cluster (A1) is set to "permanent". In national versions (Denmark, Finland, Iceland,
Norway, Sweden, Canada this function is set in the factory for legal reasons and cannot be deactivated.

Terminal 61 ON

Function

The daytime driving lights can only be actuated when the engine is running (Circuit 61 on). The EIS control unit (N73) and the instrument cluster (A1)
send the "daytime running lamps ON" message to the following control units via the class B (interior) Controller Area Network Bus (CAN-B):

Front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)

Rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2)

The front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) actuates the left standing and parking lamp (E1e3) and the left low beam (E1e2) of the
left front lamp unit (E1) and the right standing and parking lamp (E2e3) and the right low beam (E2e2) of the right front lamp unit (E2).
The rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) actuates the left taillamp and parking lamp (E3e2) of the left taillamp (E3), the right
taillamp and parking lamp (E4e2) of the right taillamp (E4), the left license plate lamp (E19/1) and the right license plate lamp (E19/2).
The daytime running lamps have a higher priority than the automatic driving lamps.

In countries with statutory daytime running light regulations in daytime running lamps mode only the headlamp flasher is permitted, but not the high
beam. The high beam is only permissible if the headlamps have been manually adjusted via the exterior lamp switch in the light switch module (S1).

In vehicles with code (550) Trailer hitch, the CAN-B message "daytime running lamps ON" is sent by the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay
module (N10/1) to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1), which actuates the 13-pin trailer hitch socket (X58).
