Irrespective of the type of emergency call, in addition to the transmission of the SMS message, a voice connection is immediately established to the
service center, and the user can discuss the matter with a customer service representative. If the service center is unable to establish a connection to the
vehicle, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) then attempts to establish a connection from the vehicle to the service center. The information
service is a free service provided by Mercedes-Benz Customer Service.
Voice output occurs exclusively over the left front emergency call speaker (H4/46) and the right front emergency call speaker (H4/47). Both speakers are
discretely actuated by the emergency call system control unit (N123/4).

The hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) is used for voice input.

Normally the telephone connections are handled over the telephone antenna (A2/22) (model 209.4, model 209.3 up to 31.5.06) or over the telephone
antenna (A2/49a1) (model 209.3 as of 1.6.06), which is located on the roof.
In the event that the telephone antenna (A2/22 or A2/49a1) is defective, the emergency call system control unit (N123/4) actuates the emergency call
system left backup antenna (A2/54) and the emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55) in the rear bumper over the emergency call system
antenna splitter (A2/25).

After an Emergency-Call emergency call is received at the rescue headquarters (police, fire department etc.), a two-way radio connection to the vehicle is
built up in order to be able to question the occupants or persons involved. In this way rescue measures corresponding to the actual severity of the
accident can be introduced.
The two-way radio communications between the vehicle and the rescue headquarters responsible is controlled via the vehicle's telephone system.

This is accomplished via the telephone antenna (A2/22) and E-call control unit (A35/8).

Should the telephone antenna no longer be capable of functioning as the result of an accident, the system automatically switches over to the emergency
call system left backup antenna (A2/54) or emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55).

The voice connection takes place via the microphone of the hands- free system (B25) and via left front emergency call speaker (H4/46) and right front
speaker (H4/47).

The voice connection must be for at least 30 seconds. If it is interrupted during this time, the call connection is repeated.

Switch on characteristics:
The emergency-call system is switched on by turning the key in the electronic ignition switch control module (N73) to the "circuit 15R ON" position.
The switch-on procedure is indicated by the indicator lamp flashing (5 seconds) in the SOS pushbutton switch (S93/3). The system is ready for
operation.

After switch on the transceiver unit integrated into the E-call control module (A35/8) is activated. Parallel to this it awaits a ready confirmation from the
restraint systems control module (N2/7).

If the system is not authorized, an error message appears in the instrument cluster and the system is not operational.
