The COMAND operating, display and control unit is the central component in the COMAND system. It contains a video-capable color liquid crystal
display (LCD) for displaying information such as control menus and map data for navigation as well as for displaying the picture received on the TV or
for playing video CDs and DVDs. Operation is via dedicated pushbuttons and 2 rotary switches, as well as being menu guided on the LCD display.
Several functions can also be activated with the aid of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) buttons. It should be remembered in this case that all
button operations on the MFL are first processed by the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster links the incoming button actuations with the current
menu configuration on the multifunction display (A1p13) and, where applicable, it sends a corresponding Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus)
(CAN) message to the COMAND operating, display and control unit. Optionally the vehicle can also be equipped with a voice control system (VCS
[SBS]) (with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])) for telephone and some audio functions so that operator convenience can be yet further
enhanced.
Networking of COMAND system components
The digital components of the COMAND operating, display and control unit are networked to each other by a bus system, over which control commands
and useful information are exchanged between the individual system components.
The individual components operate with different data formats and place different requirements on transfer speed and safety. For this reason, various bus
