Coolant: Description and Operation

NOTES ON ENGINE COOLANT

Anti-Freeze/Corrosion Inhibitor Is Used For The Following Purposes:

To provide sufficient protection against corrosion and cavitation for all components

To protect against freezing (anti-freeze)

To increase the boiling point so that the coolant does not evaporate so quickly. This helps prevent coolant loss at high engine coolant
temperatures.

Checking Coolant During Operation
Before the cold season starts check the freezing point of the coolant.
In countries with high outdoor temperatures check the anti-freeze/corrosion inhibitor concentration once each year.
The corrosion protection in the coolant decreases during operation. Such coolants have a highly corrosive effect.

CAUTION:  The maximum permissible period of use for the approved coolant in passenger car engines is three years.

Before adding new coolant, flush all used coolant out of the cooling system.

Concentration
50% anti-freeze/corrosion inhibitor offers protection against freezing down to approx. -37°C. A higher concentration is only practical when the
ambient temperatures are lower.
A 55% concentration of anti-freeze/corrosion inhibitor offers protection against freezing down to approx. -45°C.
More than 55% concentration of anti-freeze/corrosion inhibitor reduces the protection against freezing and has a negative effect on the heat
transfer.

Water
Use clean water which is not too hard. Potable water frequently fulfills these requirements, however, not always. The concentration of dissolved
solids in the water can be significant for corrosion. In case of doubt, analyze the water.
