Steering Shaft Coupler: Service and Repair
Remove/Install Steering Coupling
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

Switch off easy entry function for driver's seat and steering wheel

Vehicles with memory.
CAUTION: Otherwise the driver's seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e.g. when the driver's door is opened or closed.
The upper frame may be damaged when the retainer special tool is installed.
NOTE: It is switched off using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu on the multifunction display, see vehicle owner's manual.
DANGER:

Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
-
Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points
specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Raise vehicle.

Detach lower engine compartment paneling

Disconnect the connector (a) on the control valve of the rack-and-pinion steering and unclip cable on exhaust shielding plate of steering coupling
(23m) and on the front axle carrier

Detach exhaust shielding plate of steering coupling (23m) at control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (23)
NOTE: Three screws.

Unscrew upper and lower bolt (25a, 25b) of steering coupling (25)
NOTE: To do this, rotate the steering coupling (25) into the corresponding position.
CAUTION: Installation: Replace locking plate (25g) with self-locking nut

Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and secure with holding device
CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the contact spiral will be
destroyed.

Carefully pull steering coupling (25) out of control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (predetermined breaking point on control valve)
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage).
