Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Power Steering Gear

Removal/Installation

NOTE:  On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Also refer to Service and Repair,
Arming and Disarming.

1. Remove upper and lower engine compartment noise insulation.
2. Remove power steering fluid from pump using special suction tool 112 589 00 72 00, or equivalent.
3. Remove track rod and drag link from pitman arm using suitable puller and thrust piece.
4. Remove heat shield at steering coupling.
5. Remove exhaust connection pipe.
6. Remove shield from body.
7. Remove high-pressure expansion hose, then return line at connection joint. Plug hose openings on steering gear end.
8. Remove steering coupling Allen bolt.
9. Press steering coupling on lower steering shaft from steering gear as follows:

a. On vehicles with fixed steering column, remove steering coupling Allen bolts, then push steering coupling up lower steering shaft toward

passenger compartment until it is released from steering splines.

b. On vehicles with adjustable steering column, fully extend column, then remove upper Allen bolt and use screwdriver to press lower steering

shaft from steering coupling.

10. Remove steering gear, then check coupling for wear. Never turn steering wheel with steering gear removed on vehicles equipped with

contact spiral. Contact spiral could be destroyed.

INSTALLATION

1. Ensure steering wheel is centered with upper spokes horizontal. Adjust with special steering wheel adjustment tool 129 589 01 21 00, or

equivalent, if necessary.

2. Proceed as follows:

a. With steering coupling removed, align markings on worm gear and housing cover.
b. Remove steering coupling from steering gear only when steering coupling needs to replaced separately or space limitations make removal of

steering coupling necessary for replacing steering gear.

3. Clamping slot on universal joint and mark on steering gear must be opposite one another.
4. Install new steering gear bolts to lower side member/front axle carrier. Tighten to specifications.
5. Install steering coupling/shaft. Push steering shaft into steering coupling or steering shaft with coupling onto steering shaft splines as necessary.
6. Ensure solid connection by checking following:

a. Double flat sides of splines on steering coupling must be covered.
b. Steering shaft face can be seen through coupling.
c. Steering coupling is against seal ring as necessary.

7. Install new steering coupling Allen bolts. Tighten to specifications.
8. Remove steering gear plugs, then install high-pressure expansion hose and return line to steering gear. Tighten lines to specifications.
9. Install heat shield at steering coupling.

10. Install exhaust connection pipe.
11. Install shield.
12. Install new track rod and drag link to pitman arm nuts.
13. Refill power steering/tandem pump and bleed system.
14. Check for steering gear for proper operation and leaks.
15. Connect battery ground cable.

Replacing Steering Gear on Vehicles Involved In an Accident

Replacing Steering Gear on Vehicles Involved In an Accident:

Assessing steering gear of vehicle involved in accident:
1. If the accident involves body damage (e.g. damaged wings, side members, side panelling, rear section etc.) the steering gear can be reused provided:

a) Front axle parts such as steering knuckle, control arm, tie rod and drag link, pitman arm, steering knuckle arm and steering idler arm are not

damaged and the pitman arm shaft has not been twisted on the splined profile.

b) No overstressing of the front axle has occurred or must be assumed.
c) The steering gear can be rotated on the steering joint by hand from lock to lock without any signs of jamming.

2. The steering gear should be replaced for safety reasons if:

a) Parts of the front axle or of the steering gear have been permanently misshapen.
b) An overstressing of the front axle is confirmed by the results of a measurement of axle alignment.

When assessing accident damage to the steering gear, pay attention to the following points:
