General function requirements

Passenger-side seat occupied recognition, general
The passenger-side seat occupied recognition detects whether the front passenger seat is occupied and whether a child seat is fitted.
The automatic child seat recognition function is only guaranteed to work with a child seat that has been approved and coded by Daimler AG. This child
seat must be equipped with two transponders (resonators), which are located at the left and right in its base.
The passenger-side seat occupied recognition consists of the following subfunctions:
^
Function sequence for front passenger seat occupied recognition
^
Function sequence for outputting status and fault messages
Function sequence for front passenger seat occupied recognition
The front passenger seat occupancy as well as the automatic child seat recognition are sensed by the front passenger seat occupied and child seat
recognition sensor (B48).
The signals are read in by the restraint system control unit (N2/7).
The following situations are defined:
-
Seat unoccupied:
If the seat belt is not buckled, the front passenger airbag unit, front passenger sidebag unit and front passenger belt buckle emergency tensioning
retractor unit are disabled. If the seat belt is buckled, the front passenger airbag unit is switched off.
-
Seat occupied (light or heavy person):
The front passenger airbag unit is enabled (ignition of first stage or both stages).
-
Child seat detected:
The front passenger airbag unit is disabled.
Function sequence for outputting status and fault messages
The output of status and fault messages consists of the following subfunctions:
^
Function sequence for actuating the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (N72/1e1)
^
Function sequence for outputting fault messages
Function sequence for actuating the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp
The signal for switching on the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp in the upper control panel control unit (N72/1) when a child
seat is detected is transmitted by the restraint systems control unit via the engine compartment CAN to the central gateway control unit (N93) and is
routed by this to the interior CAN.
The upper control panel control unit receives the signal and switches the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp on or off.
Function sequence for outputting fault messages
If the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor is defective or communication with the restraint systems control unit is interrupted
(e.g. plug not connected), the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp is also switched on. A fault is also stored in the restraint
systems control unit and an appropriate message is shown on the instrument cluster (A1).
If the child seat is defective or improperly positioned (only one resonator detected), the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) in the instrument
cluster and the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp are switched on.
