SUBJECT:
All Model 164 / 251 Vehicles

Rattling / Thumping Noise on Rough Roads and/or Knocking Noise When Moving Steering in Both Directions

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of rattling/thumping noises perhaps felt through the steering when driving on rough
roads or knocking noises from the steering when rapidly turning the steering from left to right, generally only noticeable when stationary with
engine running, this might be related to excessive play between steering rack and thrust piece. Perform the below diagnosis and procedure to
resolve.

Note:

It is not necessary to replace the entire rack-and-pinion steering system.

Note:

Diagnose noise issue by following the diagnostic guide located on: Netstar --> Star TekInfo --> EDAC --> Diagnostic Guides --> Power
Steering Diagnostic Guide (latest version). Refer to other bulletins and documents published on similar subject in Group 46.

Correction:

1.

Remove rack-and-pinion steering from vehicle. Refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GZ (164) or AR46.20-P-0600RT (251).

2.

Check play of thrust piece. Refer to WIS document AR46.20-P0601TX.

Note:

A radial play of up to +/- 0.6 mm at the thrust piece is no cause for complaint and does not influence the function of the steering. When
performing adjustment, set the play to a value between +/- 0.04 and 0.09 mm.

3.

Set play between steering rack and thrust piece. Refer to WIS document AR46.20-P0601TX.

4.

Install steering gear. Refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GZ (164) or AR46.20-P-0600RT (251).
