Seat Belt Control Module: Description and Operation
Function

The airbag control module (N2/7) has two integrated redundant acceleration sensors to sense:  

-

the acceleration affecting the vehicle in the longitudinal direction in  the event of a head-on collision.  

-

the acceleration affecting the vehicle in the longitudinal direction in the event of a rear end collision.  

-

the acceleration affecting the vehicle in the lateral direction in the event of a side collision.

Moreover, the control module senses 

-

the signals from the left side airbag sensor (A53/1) and right side airbag sensor (A54/1).  

-

the switching states of the left front seatbelt buckle switch (S68/3) and right front seatbelt buckle switch (S68/4) ((USA) version only) 

-

the evaluation circuitry in the seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor in front passenger seat (B48).

The control module links all sensed signals and actuates in the event of an impact precisely the airbags/side airbags/window airbags and emergency
tensioning retractors required for optimum passenger protection.

An additional safety sensor is integrated into the control module to protect against erroneous actuation during normal operation resulting from
electro-magnetic influences, etc. This sensor which also acts as a switch is only actuated in the event of deceleration caused by a head-on collision. It is
connected into the existing driver and passenger ignition circuits and conducts the full ignition current when they are actuated.

The safety sensor is not connected into the ignition circuits for the driver and passenger emergency tensioning retractors. However, its switching state is
checked by the control module before actuation of the emergency tensioning retractors. The emergency tensioning retractors are only triggered when it is
actuated by deceleration.

In the event of a side collision the safety sensor has no function. A plausibility check performed in the control module provides additional safety to
prevent erroneous actuation. Here the signals received from the side airbag sensors are compared with the internally measured acceleration values.
