Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair
AR42.20-P-0520I Remove/Install Front Brake Control Cable

WARNING

^

Risk of fatal injury due to vehicle sliding or tipping off the hoist, refer to Lifting Vehicle.

Align vehicle between the pillars of the hoist and position the four support plates at the hoist mounting points specified by the vehicle
manufacturer.

Removal

1. Raise vehicle.
2. Remove rear cross brace on frame floor
3. Lower rear exhaust system.

Unhook rear bracket. between the center and rear muffler at rear axle and unscrew rear muffler bracket on frame floor and detach exhaust
system until the heat shield under the propeller shaft can be removed.

4. Remove heat shield under propeller shaft
5. Preload automatic slack adjuster. 
6. Unhook return spring (94).
7. Unhook brake cable (85) from idler lever (91).

To do this unscrew self-locking bolt (93).

8. Remove cover below instrument panel.
9. Remove accelerator pedal.

10. Remove driver's footwell floor carpet.
11. Unhook brake cable (85) from pedal (75)

Use Unclipping device, tool No. 129 589 11 63 00 (043) to unclip from pedal.

12. Detach engine compartment lining

Loosen heat shield on transmission until it is possible to guide through the brake cable (85).

13. Unclip brake cable (85) from retaining clips (85a) in driver's footwell and on outside of frame floor and pull through the rubber grommet (85b) on

transmission tunnel and remove.

14. Unhook brake cable (85) from frame floor.

Use Unclipping device, tool No. 129 589 11 63 00 (043) to unclip from frame floor.

Installation

15. Install in reverse order, noting the following:

Tighten bolt of brake cable to automatic slack adjuster to:12 Nm

Replace retaining clips (85a). 

-

Ensure rubber ring (85c) is seated correctly at nipple.

Replace self-locking bolt (93).

16. Release load on automatic slack adjuster. 
17. Operate parking brake firmly several times.

If pedal can be depressed more than 10 notches without there being adequate braking effect, adjust parking brake. See: Adjustments
