The side airbag unit is installed behind the door trim panel of the driver and passenger door. The side airbag unit can be recognized from the inscription,
"SRS AIRBAG" embossed on the door panel. A specified rupture area is provided in the door trim panel to allow the airbag to emerge.

The side airbag unit consists of plastic housing which is attached by means of a retaining plate made from stamped metal. The side airbag unit is firmly
attached to the door inner panel by the retaining plate which is held by three rivets.

The electrical connection for activating the squib [R12/9 or R12/10] is located on the rear of the side airbag unit and is not visible when the unit is
installed. If the electrical connector is unplugged the connection of this squib is short circuited by a short-circuit bridge.

The plastic housing of the side airbag unit accommodates not only the ignition device but also the gas generator and the folded airbag which is
manufactured from a plastic fabric.

If the side airbag is activated a solid propellant is ignited to produce the propellant gas in the same way as for the driver and passenger airbag units. The
propellant gas inflates the side airbag, the plastic housing rips open in the middle and the side airbag unit emerges into the passenger compartment
through the specified rupture area in the door panel.

The side airbag with its total volume of about 16 liters protects the driver or front passenger from an impact against the door area.

After the side airbag has achieved its maximum protective effect it deflates by allowing the gas to escape through an insert made of gas-permeable filter
fabric. The airbag immediately collapses.

NOTE:  After the side airbag unit has been activated the center part of the door panel which has ripped open must be replaced. Attach the new airbag
unit using only the specified special rivets.
