Camshaft: Testing and Inspection
Checking Camshaft Timing

PRECEDING WORK 

Cylinder head covers removed.   See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve Cover/Service and Repair
Spark plugs removed.

OVERVIEW

Camshaft code numbers:

check (step 1).

CHECKING TIMING OF INTAKE CAMSHAFT
Intake cams at cylinders 1 or 7:

Position so that only the base circles are resting against the bucket tappets (5) (step 2).

Dial gauge holder (2) 363 589 02 21 00 with threaded sleeve (4):

Install at cylinder 1 or 7 (step 3).

Dial gauge (1):

Fit into dial gauge holder (2) with tracer pin (3) on the inside of the camshaft to be checked (steps 4 to 6).

Preload of 3 mm and angle of approximately 90° of tracer pin (3) on bucket tappet (5):

Set (step 4).

Crankshaft:

Rotate with wrench socket 001 589 65 09 00 in direction of rotation of engine.

At valve lift of 2 mm the reading at the vibration damper must agree with the figure in the table "intake valve opens after TDC" (step 7).

CHECKING EXHAUST CAMSHAFT TIMING
Intake cams at cylinders 1 or 7:

Position so that only the base circles are resting against the bucket tappets (5) (step 8).

Dial gauge holder (2) 363 589 02 21 00 with threaded sleeve (4):

Install at cylinder 1 or 7 (step 9).

Dial gauge (1):

Fit into dial gauge holder (2) with tracer pin (3) on the inside of the camshaft to be checked (steps 10 to 12).
