Wheel Bearing: Description and Operation
Rear
The rear wheel assembly has the following characteristics:

Each rear wheel is bolted to a rear hub.

There are two opposed and tapered roller rear wheel bearings (inner and outer) with grease retainer seals (inner and outer), encased in one single
cup or cartridge.

This rear wheel bearing is pressed into the rear wheel knuckle bore from the inboard side until it rests against the shoulder on the outboard side.
^
A snap ring is installed in a groove on the inboard side of the knuckle bore for added bearing retention.
^
A bearing dust seal is installed on the CV joint, inboard of the rear wheel knuckle, rear wheel bearing and rear hub.
^
The rear hub is pressed into the rear wheel knuckle assembly.
^
The CV joint is pressed through the rear hub in the rear wheel knuckle assembly.
^
A rear axle wheel hub retainer attaches the rear hub to the CV joint.
