Vacuum Brake Booster: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Disconnect master cylinder from booster and position aside. It is not necessary to disconnect brake lines, but care should be taken to avoid
twisting or kinking lines.

3.

Disconnect manifold vacuum hose from booster check valve.

4.

Working under instrument panel, disconnect stop lamp switch electrical connector under instrument panel.

5.

Remove stop lamp switch retaining pin. Slide switch off brake pedal pin enough so outer plate of switch clears the pin, then remove switch from
pin.

6.

Remove booster-to-dash panel attaching screws.

7.

Slide booster pushrod, nylon washers and bushing off brake pedal pin.

8.

Move booster forward until booster studs clear dash panel, then remove booster.

9.

Reverse procedure to install.
a. On Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis, torque booster to dash panel retaining nuts and master cylinder to booster locking nuts to 14-24 ft.

b. On Tempo & Topaz, torque booster to dash panel retaining nuts and master cylinder to booster locking nuts to 13-25 ft. lbs.
