Inspect base bushing for wear or signs of excess heat concentration, replace complete distributor assembly if bushing is damaged.
20.
Inspect shaft oil seal for tears or cuts, replace complete distributor assembly if oil seal is damaged.
21.
Carefully check the spring retainer that holds the shaft oil seal against the shaft. It must be present and have no kinks or breaks. Replace spring if
necessary.
22.
Inspect base "O" ring for cuts or damage and replace "O" ring if necessary.
23.
Inspect base casting for cracks and wear. Replace complete distributor assembly, if damage is found.
Re-Assembly and Installation
1.
Assemble stator retainer assembly to the stator assembly by sliding the stator bumper into the groove in the bottom of the stator with the horseshoe
opening at the diaphragm rod pivot pin.
2.
Make sure the metal babe bushing spacer is present and properly seated on the top of the base bushing.
NOTE:
Metal spacer was eliminated approximately mid-year and may not be present.
3.
Thread the connector through the large opening in the side of the base.
4.
Place the stator assembly over the base bushing with the diaphragm pivot pin approximately in front of the diaphragm mounting hole.
5.
Using a small screwdriver or punch, line up the holes in the stator retainer plate with the holes in the base.
6.
Install the three retaining screws in the base to specification. The screw, clockwise from the diaphragm mounting hole, is to have the ground eyelet
from the connector mounted under it.
7.
Check stator assembly for free rotation. If stator does not rotate freely, dis-assemble and check parts.
8.
Assemble connector hold-down plate to connector by placing the tab on the connector into the slot in the connector hold-down plate.
9.
Place connector and hold-down plate against side of the base, locating connector in groove, and line up holes in the hold-down plate with the holes
in the base.
10.
Check the wires from the connector to insure that the wires are not pinched between the base and the connector hold-down plate.
11.
Install the two screws to secure the connector holddown plate to the base to specification.
12.
Install the diaphragm assembly.
13.
Apply a light coat of M2C162A oil to the distributor shaft below the armature.
NOTE:
Do not over-lubricate.
14.
Insert the shaft assembly through the base bushing.
15.
Place drive coupling over shaft and line up paint dots that were made during dis-assembly. Start pin into drive coupling and shaft.
16.
With someone holding the distributor steady on the support tool or vise, drive the pin into the shaft until the end of the pin is flush with the step in
the drive coupling.
17.
Check for free movement of the drive coupling on the pin and that the pin does not extend beyond the step in the coupling in either direction.
18.
Remove the distributor from the fixture and check for free rotaion.
19.
Install the drive coupling spring in the groove on the drive coupling.
20.
Install the distributor assembly in the engine.
21.
Install distributor cap and rotor.
