Valve Spring Retainer: Service and Repair

    Provided the valve or valve seat is not damaged, broken valve springs or leaking stem seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head.

1.

Remove valve cover and rocker arm shaft as previously described.

2.

Remove spark plug and both pushrods of cylinder being serviced.

3.

Apply compressed air to spark plug hole, Fig. 10. Exercise extreme caution as air pressure may force rotation of the crankshaft.

Compress valve spring using a spring compressor, then remove valve spring retainer locks, spring retainer and spring. If air pressure does not hold
valve in closed position, the valve is likely damaged or improperly seated and the cylinder head should be removed for further inspection.

5.

Remove valve stem seal.

6.

Reverse procedure to install. Lubricate, then install new valve stem seal using tool No. T37P-6571-A or equivalent.
